People today will tell you they believe in anything and everything from the tooth fairy to zombies, from aliens to Elvis still being alive. Even in churches people believe lots of things that are actually contrary to what the Bible teaches. Like sex outside of marriage is ok, like stealing from your boss is ok because everybody else does it, like hating someone and being filled with revenge and bitterness because you have a right to? And the list goes on…
“But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.” 1 Peter 2:9
BUT – we are meant to be a chosen generation, a people belonging to God.
Our believing impacts our life choices
You never know how much you really believe a matter until its truth or falsehood becomes a matter of life and death. It is easy to say you believe a rope to be strong as long as you are merely using it to tie a box. But suppose you had to hang by that rope over a precipice. Wouldn’t you then first discover how much you really believed it? C.S Lewis
Acts 16:31 Believing commits you into something. Romans 1:16 (amp) pulls out that word believe into three key things – personal trust, confident surrender, firm reliance.
1.SOMEBODY IS NOTICING WHAT YOUR BELIEVING LOOKS LIKE
Like Paul and Silas in prison – believing makes you sing when you have nothing to sing about, because it’s not about you, it’s about the Saviour you believe in. They didn’t sing because they felt good about where they were and what was happening to them. Believing is trust, confident surrender and firm reliance – not on who you are, but on the Lord Jesus.
2.BELIEVING TAKES YOURSELF OUT OF THE PICTURE
and photoshops God in to a whole new level of commitment in believing right. Believing discounts what you can do yourself and focuses on what only God can do for you. Yes, you can help yourself, but there are things only God can do for you. For example when it comes to wealth, wisdom is applied knowledge. Proverbs is about how to live like a King. Solomon tells his sons – it’s one thing to want to be someone, but you need to learn how to be that person God wants you to be.
3.BELIEVING COMMITS YOU BEYOND WHO YOU THINK YOU ARE TO BEING WHO GOD SAYS YOU ARE
In my life when I believe God for something now, I go looking for it. Just like the woman with the lost coin, it’s here somewhere and it’s mine – I just have to lay my hand on it. Right believing isn’t a feeling, it’s knowing the truth of God’s Word and standing on it.
4.BE CAREFUL WHAT YOUR BELIEVING CAUSES YOU TO COMMIT TO
A lot of Christians fall into wrong believing. They start to believe things that aren’t God’s truth, often things sound inspirational, they sound like gospel, but they aren’t! Wrong believing is as dangerous as right believing is powerful. What you believe on a daily basis determines how you are going to live – right or wrong.
For God to take us from here to there our believing might have to change in a lot of ways. Make sure your believing is based on who God is not what your experience of life is about.
